"LOVE WITH RESPECT" EC THEME FOR CONDOM WEEK

This serves to inform and also to invite your institution to cover activities organised to observe the STD AWARENESS WEEK/CONDOM WEEK,
which is set to start on Monday 14 February 2000 in various places around the province. The week has been declared nationally to give
greater focus to the elimination of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. The theme for the week is "love with respect."

The activities include a rural peoples forum, a Valentines Condom Bash (party), a workers forum, public debate, a rally with traditional
leaders, a pledge by the provincial government and several other activities scheduled to take place in the regions district.

Details are as follows:

* Monday, 14 February 2000: A Valentines Condom Bash scheduled for 19:00 at the Eastern Beach (Beach Burger area), which is regarded as
one of the high risk areas. MEC for Welfare Ms Ncumisa Kondlo will deliver a brief message on behalf of the provincial government. Several
other dignitaries are expected to grace this occasion, which will feature CKI FM Stereo DJs.
* Wednesday, 16 February 2000: There will be a lunch hour debate on fighting HIV/AIDS with workers at Daimler-Chrysler plant in East
London.
* Friday, 18 February 2000: A Peoples Public Debate on awareness of dangers of unsafe sex and the plight of people living with the disease
will be held in King Williams Town.
* Saturday, 19 February 2000, National Minister of Health Dr Manto Shabalala-Msimang will address a rural peoples forum in Qumbu Town Hall
at 13:00, involving Traditional Leaders in the campaign to encourage young and sexually active men and women to put their shoulder behind
the fight against HIV/AIDS scourge.

The activities are organised by Office of the Premier and the Department of Health with a number of stakeholders playing a role in ensuring
the success of the partnership against HIV/AIDS. These include CKI FM, various provincial departments and the Eastern Cape Council of
Churches.

Campaigns against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS are being intensified in the light of unabated increase of reported HIV
infections. They are one of a series of efforts designed to stop the erosion of development gains made over many years because of the
HIV/AIDS threat.
